Dielectric behavior of electroactive fluorinate-based terpolymers

چکیده
The dielectric and ferroelectric properties of the poly~vinylidene fluoride–trifluoroethylene– chlorotrifluoroethylene! terpolymers are studied in the temperature range 160–380 K. More attention was given to the dielectric loss in the dielectric spectra and the following results were obtained: ~1! there are two dielectric polarization mechanisms, modes A and B, contributing to the majority of the dielectric permittivity; ~2! by using the Cole–Cole plot method, precise relaxation rates of mode B can be obtained, which follow the Vogel–Fulcher relation with reasonable parameters, TVF5;16062 K, UVF5;0.1660.01 eV, n051310 12 Hz. The temperature where mode A occurs does not shift with the variation of frequency and a well-developed hysteresis loop is observed, indicating the existence of a normal ‘‘paraelectric–ferroelectric’’ transition in the terpolymer. © 2004 American Institute of Physics. @DOI: 10.1063/1.1688455#

Modeling viscoelastic dielectrics
Dielectric elastomers, as an important category of electroactive polymers, are known to have viscoelastic properties that strongly affect their dynamic performance and limit their applications. Very few models accounting for the effects of both electrostatics and viscoelasticity exist in the literature, and even fewer are capable of making reliable predictions under general loads and constraint...
متن کاملDielectric elastomers as next-generation polymeric actuators
Due to their versatile properties, robust behavior, facile processability and low cost, organic polymers have become the material of choice for an increasing number of mature and cutting-edge technologies. In the last decade or so, a new class of polymers capable of responding to external electrical stimulation by displaying significant size or shape change has emerged. These responsive materia...

This talk will cover two classes of electroactive polymers under development recent at Penn State. One is the modified poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene) (P(VDF-TrFE)) polymer and the other is the high dielectric constant all-organic composite. Recently, making use of the defect structure modification in P(VDF-TrFE) based polymers, we converted normal ferroelectric P(VDF-TrFE) into rel...
متن کاملNonlinear Force Control of Dielectric Electroactive Polymer Actuators
Electroactive Polymers (EAPs) have a great potential to provide smart solutions to engineering problems in fields such as robotics, medical devices, power generation, actuators and sensors. This is because they yield some important characteristics that are advantageous over conventional types of actuators, like: lower weight, faster response, higher power density and quieter operation. Controll...
